Event Description

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. A student by the name of Neba Chi Smith was thrilled to be here today at the weekly students seminar of the Centre for Cybersecurity and Mathematical Cryptology. Today, Neba had the opportunity to speak about "Internet Basics for Noobs," and we will like to elaborate on some of the key points he discussed during my presentation.

The internet has become an integral part of our lives, and it's important for everyone, regardless of their level of expertise, to understand its basics. He started my presentation by explaining what the internet is. He described it as a global network of interconnected computers that allows the exchange of information and communication between users worldwide.

Next, he delved into the concept of IP addresses. He explained that an IP address is a unique numerical identifier assigned to each device connected to the internet. It acts as the device's digital address, enabling it to send and receive data across the network. He emphasized the difference between IPv4 and IPv6, the two main versions of IP addresses, and highlighted the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 due to the depletion of available IPv4 addresses.

Moving on, he discussed the concept of web browsers and their role in accessing information on the internet. He talked about popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, and explained how they interpret and display websites by rendering HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Another important topic he covered was website addresses or URLs (Uniform Resource Locators). He explained that URLs are used to navigate the internet and access specific web pages. He broke down the different components of a URL, including the protocol (such as HTTP or HTTPS), the domain name, and the path to the specific resource.

Security and privacy were also crucial aspects of my presentation. He stressed the importance of using strong, unique passwords for online accounts, enabling two-factor authentication whenever possible, and being cautious when sharing personal information online. He also highlighted the significance of HTTPS, which ensures secure communication between a user's browser and a website.

To wrap up his presentation, he touched upon internet etiquette and responsible digital citizenship. He emphasized the importance of respecting others' privacy, avoiding cyberbullying, and being mindful of the content we share online.

In summary, his presentation on "Internet Basics for Noobs" aimed to provide a foundation of knowledge for those who are new to the Internet. By understanding concepts like IP addresses, web browsers, URLs, security, and responsible internet use, individuals can navigate the online world more confidently and make informed decisions about their digital interactions.
