Empowering African Mathematicians: The Successful Completion of the CIMPA Cryptography School in Douala
As the summer of 2024 draws to a close, the University of Douala celebrates the fruitful conclusion of the CIMPA (International Center for Pure and Applied Mathematics) summer school on the mathematical foundations of cryptology. This two-week intensive program, held from July 15th to July 26th, brought together students and researchers from across Africa to delve into the cutting-edge field of cryptography.

The school was co-organized by Professor Emmanuel Fouotsa, the program coordinator of the Centre for Cybersecurity and Mathematical Cryptology at the University of Douala, and Professor Roger Oyono from the University of French Polynesia. Together, they assembled a distinguished faculty of lecturers hailing from Cameroon, France, Germany, and Belgium, ensuring that the participants were exposed to a diverse range of expertise and perspectives.

One of the highlights of the CIMPA school was the participation of 14 students from the University of Bamenda's Centre for Cybersecurity and Mathematical Cryptology, who were awarded stipends to attend the event. This opportunity not only enriched the learning experience for these students but also demonstrated the commitment of the organizers to fostering the development of young African mathematicians.

Throughout the two-week program, the participants engaged in a diverse range of activities, including lectures, problem-solving sessions, and working groups. This blend of theoretical and practical components allowed the attendees to not only acquire new knowledge but also develop essential skills in applying mathematical concepts to real-world cryptographic challenges.

As the CIMPA school in Douala concludes, the organizers, faculty, and participants alike are filled with a sense of accomplishment and optimism for the future of mathematics in Africa.
